The King River Woodcutters' Express Strahan - Queenstown - Strahan Named after the old woodcutters called 'Piners' - the breed of hardy axemen who harvested the valuable Huon Pine and other exotic timbers, this fascinating train is reminiscent of the pioneering days and runs from Regatta Point, Strahan to Dubbil Barril and then on and over the rack to Queenstown, sometimes picking up freight wagons and returning to Strahan with Huon Pine logs during summer. This train, which tells the story of the history of the West Coast and its intrepid explorers, who searched for gold, pine and precious metals, runs beside the wild King River down which large rafts of Huon Pine were once towed to Strahan and then exported all over the world. On arrival in the heart of the dense forest at Dubbil Barril, passengers can wander along pretty rainforest tracks, exploring the remote creeks down to the King River itself. Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the station overlooking the majestic King River and see firsthand the beauty of the unspoiled rainforest. The train then carries on up the steep rack through magnificent wilderness beside wild rivers and waterfalls including the spectacular King River Gorge, a breathtaking 65 metres (213 feet) below the train. On reaching Rinadeena Station, a light lunch is available before descending the rack again to Lynchford, finally terminating at Queenstown Central Station. This train then returns to Strahan during the afternoon at approx. 3:00pm. |
The Goldminers' Express Queenstown - Stahan - Queenstown This train, with its Federation carriages and historic steam and diesel locomotives brings back to life the wonderful nostalgia of a bygone era, enabling young and old to travel into the West Coast's history.
Leaving in the morning from Queenstown and following the Queen River to the 1883 goldmining settlement at Lynchford, passengers can enjoy refreshments at the old prospectors store and try their hand at gold-panning or visit the beautiful 250 year old Huon Pine tree. Leaving Lynchford, the train runs to the foot of the rack and pinion track before climbing up this steep 1:16 section. On arriving at the top of the rack at Rinadeena, set in pristine wilderness, passengers can enjoy refreshments in the pretty tearooms or visit the underground mine with its fascinating collection of fluorescent rocks and Tasmanian gemstones. The train then descends the 1:20 rack section, traversing Sailor Jack Creek through magnificent wilderness rainforest and passing over many high bridges beside the spectacular King River Gorge 65 metres (213 feet) below and on down to Dubbil Barril, skirting the majestic King River itself. After refreshments at Dubbil Barril, the line follows the river through pristine wilderness over the famous 1/2 Mile Bridge to Lower Landing Station where rare Huon Pine is freighted to sawmills around the state. In the final part of the journey, after crossing the Iron Bridge at Teepookana, the train follows the pretty meanderings of the river through deep cuttings and dense forest, finally terminating at the historic Regatta Point Station, Strahan. This train returns to Queenstown during the afternoon at approx. 3:00pm. |
