SCHOLARS HOUSE

Tarraleah is a spectacular holiday destination on 300 acres in Tasmania's Central Highlands. Located along the popular Hobart - Strahan touring route, Tarraleah is a scenic two hour drive from Hobart, Launceston or the Devonport ferry terminal. Sitting on a high plateau on the edge of World Heritage Wilderness, the Tarraleah estate is surrounded by pristine lakes, rivers, streams, ancient forests, Alpine heathlands and mountains. The region is home to world-class wild Brown trout fishing and abundant wildlife.

Scholars House was the original Tarraleah School and now offers accommodation comprising contemporary en-suite studio rooms with loft bedrooms. TV and DVD in all rooms and fabulous facilities within the original school building include fully equipped Chefs kitchen, dining room, cosy lounge with wood heater, laundry and internet room.

Scholars House also has a disabled-friendly suite and family rooms. The old school yard still features the water bubbler and mural. Children (young and old) are free to use the footballs and soccer balls on the grassed area that was once the school oval, or play a game of quoits, boules or table-tennis. For the more energetic, Tarraleah has a gymnasium and squash court.

For self-catering, The Highland Store stocks essential supplies plus fresh produce and gourmet treats. There are also barbeque facilities on the estate. For those who love to dine out, Tarraleah offers three great dining options. Tease & tantalise your taste buds at the licensed Teez Cafe & Lookout, offering big breakfasts, lunches, morning and afternoon tea. Enjoy fresh mountain air and sensational views as you dine on the balcony, or relax by the central wood fire with an espresso coffee, Tasmanian beer or glass of fine local wine.

The Highlander Arms charms with highland hospitality, whisky tasting, icy beers on tap, games room, large verandah, hearty meals and cosy family dining room. The adjoining reading room was once the Tarraleah Library and is filled with fascinating memorabilia and books from a bygone era.

For an exceptional gourmet experience, dine in Wildside Restaurant. The 4-course evening meal features fresh island produce presented with passion and flair by resident chef Will Godman, and an impressive selection of 300 local and international wines.

Other pleasures at Tarraleah include an evening wildlife tour, Highland Cattle feeding, walking the temperate rainforest waterfall track, and bird watching, with over 80 bird species in the region. Adventure Tarraleah offers endless activities, equipment hire, guides and tours. Fishing licenses, flies, lures, clothing and accessories are all available at the Loomis Pro-tackle Fishing Store. Enjoy trout fishing, boating, lake kayaking, golf on Tasmania's highest course, down hill mountain-biking, bush walking or one of the many 4WD adventure tours.
