QUAMBY ESTATE

Completed in the late 1830's the architectural style of this magnificent homestead is described as Anglo-Indian colonial villa or bungalow.

This strikingly beautiful architectural with its high and unbroken roofline would almost certainly have been inspired by the barrack-style architecture so prevalent at the time of the English army's presence in India, or the India of the Raj.

Reached along a red gravel and tree-lined driveway the homestead is positioned in extensive and sweeping grounds reminiscent of an English parkland setting. Gently undulating front lawns extend for hundreds of metres east and north and feature spectacular examples of elms, oaks, ash, hornbeams and poplars - many over 100 years old.

The homestead's spacious reception rooms have soaring ceilings with decorative cornices and central roses, 8-panelled French doors opening to the wide flagstone verandahs fronted with turned timber columns adorned with decorative fretwork and balustrades.

There are original black and white Italian marble fireplaces, high English glass mirrors and internal security timber shutters (originally for protection against attacks from natives or bushrangers). A long central or cross hallway connects these rooms with stairs to the upper level, the kitchen entryway and to a number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

At the northern end of the hallway an office library provides a link to the home's north wing, which includes the former ballroom (now a billiard room), additional bedrooms and a bathroom. The south wing of the home includes the master bedroom with ensuite, tennis or games room, service rooms (one of the female convict sleeping quarters), a small conservatory and linkway to a walled garden and the tennis court.

The upper storey has a central hallway, four bedrooms and a further bedroom. Most rooms have fire places. The three-roomed basement cellar once served as the male convict quarters. Commencing in 1828 and using clay for the bricks, timber from the property and hand-hewn sandstone the homestead took almost ten years to complete. Interior and exterior walls are 22 inches thick and built of solid brick. The homestead has two storeys - a single storey at the front with a staircase leading to a second level of dormer rooms at the rear.
