Diamond Island, two kilometres north of Bicheno, is an inspiring place. It is unique. One and two-roomed, four star, self catering apartments cheek by jowl with the natural world.

This is a thoroughly modern resort - spas, tennis court, swimming pool, cable TV, wireless broadband communications and celebrated Facets restaurant - yet steeped in local history and folklore and located adjacent to a beachfront rookery that is home to hundreds of pairs of penguins.

Each night the penguins emerge from the ocean on the way to their nests. They're gone again before you have breakfast.

Out on the sand spit between the resort and the island, flocks of beautiful crested terns, pied and sooty oystercatchers congregate at low tide to look for their pickings.

Meanwhile, at Facets, the pickings are unsurpassed. Abalone, scallops, mussels, oysters, crayfish and blue eye trevalla are sourced locally and delivered fresh. The beef comes from local herds, butchered and aged on the bone.

Diamond Island is located close to Freycinet National Park and world renowned Wineglass Bay.
